Firearm License Motivation & Application

A Firearm Licence Application (using the SAPS 271 form) is the formal request submitted to the South African Police Service (SAPS) to obtain permission to legally own a specific firearm (e.g., a specific handgun or rifle). This application is the final step after you have successfully obtained your Competency Certificate.

Required Documentation

R600/motivation

​Section 13 and 15 Application

  • 2 ID photos

  • 2x Certified copy of ID Document (front & back)

  • Certified copy of Proof of residence (electricity bill, Contract agreement, Signed letter of landlord)

  • Certified copy of Competency Certificate issued by the SAPS

  • Certified copy of Proficiency training Certificate

  • Certified copy of Proficiency Training Statement of Results

  • 2x Letters of Good Character (Template will be Provided)

Safe Inspection

  • One colour photo of the safe, with the door closed.

  • One colour photo of the safe, with the door open.

  • One colour photo of the safe where the roll bolts with which it is attached are clearly visible.

Photos may be printed on any plain white paper, but it must be printed in COLOUR.

The backside of the photos must contain your initials and surname, ID number, and signature.

Section 16 Application

  • Membership of Hunting or Sports association

  • Letter of Good Standing from Hunting or Sports association

  • Dedicated Status

  • Endorsement letter form Hunting or Sports association

  • List of past activities

Firearms from an Estate

  • All the above+​

  • Certified copy of ID document of the deceased

  • Certified copy of Death Certificate of the deceased

  • Certified copy of Firearm license of the deceased

  • Certified copy of ID document of the Executor

  • Letter of Executorship

  • Letter of Consent from the executor (stating that the firearm is being allocated to you as the heir.)

  • Certified copy of the Last Will and Testament or any estate documentation showing you are the heir to the firearm.
