Competency Applications
A Firearm Competency Application is a mandatory, formal process required by the South African Police Service (SAPS) under the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act 60 of 2000). This application assesses whether an individual is safe, responsible, and adequately trained to own a firearm. Successful application grants the applicant a Competency Certificate, which is a prerequisite (must be obtained first) before they can apply for a specific firearm license (e.g., for a handgun or rifle). The application involves submitting specific documentation, passing prescribed tests (legal and practical), and undergoing a background check to ensure the applicant poses no danger to themselves or the community.
